If you get this any modern laptop or one with wireless G can connect. It is better to have wireless G then N router unless you are absolutely sure your laptop or wireless adapters it totally N based

If I have cable with a modem but doesn't have the router to it, would this workd with my laptop or would I need to buy something else to got with it?

This would conect to your modem by using the computer jack that goes to your computer then you would have wireless internet it also has wire connections for your house tower computer so you could use up to 5 total computers counting the laptop so the answer to your question is (yes)

New to the "wireless" stuff so I have a ????, Is this what is needed for WIFI?? I have an external USB plug in thing that you plug into the laptop. If I am in an area that has WIFI I can pick up the internet, butif not in an area, does this help to pick up signals??
