The listing, SCHINDLER'S LIST - used softcover - Third Reich, Nazi Germany, concentration camps has ended.
Synopsis:
Even though this book is the Winner of the Booker Prize Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Fiction, I have listed it under Non-Fiction. The author's preface states that the book is essentially fact. Most likely, dialogues are fictional accounts.
The book is based on the true story of German industrialist and war profiteer, Oskar Schindler, who, confronted with the horror of the extermination camps, gambled his life and fortune to rescue 1,300 Jews from the gas chambers. He interred them in his own camp on the grounds of his enamel factory. Working with the actual testimony of Jews, author Thomas Keneally artfully depicts the courage and shrewdness of an unlikely savior, a man who is a flawed mixture of hedonism and decency and who, in the presence of unutterable evil, transcends the limits of his own humanity. His MO for saving so many Jews involved clever trickery, food smuggling and bribing officials with money and liquor. He dared to walk the floors of the factory to mingle with the slave laborers, treating them like human beings. After the war, Schindler visited some of his former 'employees,' calling his survivors, "My children."
