I have these books and when I saw them listed I had to stop by and say that anyone who gets these books will read and re-read them several times. It's not a love story, though in the second book the heroine does find her love that continues throughout the rest of the series. It is hugely factual in its depiction of the era, as the writer spent several years between books traveling the world to actually visit the region she writes about and study the plants and ancient tools described in the books. There is, or was, a whole web site devoted just to the herbs and medicinal properties Ayla uses throughout the series. Hugely popular series! Fan sites all over too. There is another book in this series, but it is after Plains of Passage. Read the books in order!

is meaida mail cheeper?

I looked it up and it says that media mail is 3 times cheaper then regular mail. Here is what I found; 1. The real reason is buried in history. Mail was divided into classes back in 1863 when the Post Office was fully government owned and run:

Fundamentally, it was at least as much about politics as economics.

For example, the special rate for books and music was a deliberate subsidy to encourage people to buy books and music.

2. Still, weight is NOT the dominant factor in how much it costs the post office to process a piece of mail - human labor is.

All other things being equal, a piece of second class cost less for the post-office because it comes pre-sorted by zip code with machine readable bar-codes on it - which means that it can go as far as the local destination post office with almost no human intervention, and because a single payment pays for thousands, if not millions of pieces of mail - less clerk time.

Note also, that in the old days, when the post office would guarantee delivery times for first class mail, delivery times for other classes were longer or had no guarantees at all. That meant that the Post Office could staff for the average load; when the load was light, the other classes would get better service; when load was heavy, they'd be delayed.

(Note that this isn't to say that weight isn't a factor, just that it isn't the most important one.)
Hopes this helps. I learned something as well. Thank you.

Book 3: the Mammoth Hunters
Once again, Jean M. Auel opens the door of time to reveal an age of wonder and terror at the dawn of humanity. With all the consummate storytelling artistry and vivid authenticity she brought to the Clan of the Cave Bear and its sequel, the Valley of Horses, Jean M. Auel continues the breathtaking epic journey of the woman called Ayla. Now with her devoted Jondalar, Ayla boldly sets forth into the land of the Mamutoi -- the Mommoth Hunters, the Others she has been seeking. Though Ayla must learn their strange customs and language, it is because of her uncanny hunting and healing skills that she is adopted into the Mammoth hearth. Here Ayla finds her first woman friends, and painful memories of the Clan she left behind. Here, too, is Ranec, the dark-skinned, magnetic master carver of ivory tusks to whom Ayla is irresistibly drawn -- setting Jondalar on fire with jealousy. Throughout the icy winter, Ayla is torn between her two men. But soon will come the great spring mammoth hunt, when Ayla must choose her mate and her destiny -- to remain in the Hearth with Ranec, or to follow Jondalar into a faroff place and an unknown future.

I though eight dollars for shipping was a little high?

Actually, that's a very good price for shipping. These are thick books. If I were putting them up for auction each by themselves, I would charge $4.00 each for shipping. If you don't like the shipping, you don't have to bid.
