Description

The listing, REAL "DEPUTY SHERIFF- L.F.D." BADGE,POSSIBLY FROM PENNSYLVANIA???? has ended.

This came from an estate sale that had a lot of things from the Mendenhall family and Town in Pennsylvania, Kennett Square, to be exact. There are letters from the Mendenhall family going back to before the Civil War, before Stamps, when it just said "present" which meant "present in person to the Master of the House" or "Mistress", for that matter!! Anyways, there are items from generations of this family kept by someone who apparently died and that was the end of the interest in the Collection. I Find it fascinating, tons of photos from 160's and amazing history. This badge is clearly from a mre recent era, i believe.I assume that someone was a Member of the Volunteer Fire Department and also a Deputy Sheriff in a itty bitty tiny leetle town(thank you Rosanne Rosannadanna). A good citizen in the countryside, where there is no budget for the basic infrastructure like fire and police, volunters are a necessity. but maybe this badge belonged to a deputy sheriff in the family, I will never know!!!! So, if you live in a town that starts with an "L", you can wear this proudly, heck, no matter what the name of your town or your reasoning, it is a real badge. It is heavy and has a beautiful winged Eagle sculpted on Top and in the center the Firemen's hat and Ax and Ladder and Hose, a VERY COOL PIECE!!!!!
Hope my phone cam doesn't take away from it's coolness, it really would be funny if your last name started with an L, then you could "officially" make the family do your chores, say your name is Lawson, you are with the Lawson Police Dept .( That's the LPD to you kids-fist shaking in the air)....In a John Wayne Accent, you're with the LPD and your badge # is 6, and they better do the dishes or you'll be lookin at some hard time, in the garden, weeding!!!!Like I said, the badge # is 6, at the bottom, wish the photos were better, thank you for stopping by the stoop,
Happy Holidays, Michelle
I should have put a quarter down, but you can see the size by my hand!!

Oh that is so cool, I hoped someone would know. The estate boxes I got were from mainly Kennett Square , the Mendenhall,Loller family, is there a Mendenhall PA? I think it is in West Chester County(or am I cnfusing west dhester with another auction???) Thank you so much!!!! Wonder who Badge #6 belonged to, it is at least 30 years old, I would say, because the Loller family moved to Cali 30 years ago!!! yayayay, Thank you, a Mystery Solved!!

Dougmouzy, I did confuse the Counties, it is not West chester, but Mendenhall PA>? I have all the old letters back to the 1860's of this family, they first bought "the Red Lion" store and then got rich and I THINK the town is named after them, must google!!

Yep, city of Mendenhall, Kemnnett, PA, but all the old letters the Mendenhalls, who married into the Lollers, are addresses to Mendenhall at Kennett Square. I am going to auction the 1850's store log books and "Vigilante Society" rules, it's amazing the way the towns organized themselves from scratch, not nuch has changed , the biggest moey winner runs the town!!
