The world's most popular & enduring super hero & acclaimed novelist Tom De Haven come together to create the extraordinary It's Superman!
A novel that reinvents the early years of the Man of Steel.
Opening with the young Clark Kent on a date the novel takes an entirely fresh approach to the emergence of his superpowers & the start of his newspaper career, following him from rural 1930s Kansas across America to Hollywood in its golden age and then to New York City. He meets a worldly Lois Lane & conniving political boss Lex Luthor & begins his battles against criminal masterminds, mad scientists & supervillains inspired by fascists. Sure to appeal to fans of the TV show Smallville & the novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay as well as devoted comic book readers.
It's Superman is a fun and fast paced novel of thrilling invention, heroic escapades, ill fitting costumes & super-sized coming of age angst.
REVIEW
I didn't really know what to expect with this novel. I'm not particularly interested in Superman & I'm actually rather suspicious of novels based on others' works (which is rather bizarre for a fanfic writer I must say). I guess I was sucked in by the fantastic Chris Ware cover. And hey for once judging a book by its cover turned out to be a good thing: It's Superman! is immensely enjoyable, sweeping, & highly visual even without the aid of comic illustrations. De Haven reexamines Superman's origin story, bringing the setting back to the era of the character's creation, the 1930s & the Great Depression. Clark Kent, Lois Lane & Lex Luthor are all compellingly presented and seem like real people. Clark's self doubt does a lot to make Superman more interesting & more human. De Haven's OCs are fun & interesting too. The book is a good 425 pages long & when I reached the end all I wanted was for it to keep going.
