Questions & Comments
The rank of Gen. of the Army was created in 1944 to give equal rank to Eisenhower and other military commanders to match the rank of the British Army Marshall rank. The name General of the Army was picked for rhe five star general rank rather than Marshall as he did not want to be called Marshall Marshall.
Gen. John J. Pershing was the first five star general and was to be given a six star in keeping with his title of General of the Armies but Congress never authorized the rank. Congress later bestowed the five star rank to George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant. postumously.
