Description

The listing, 1914 Diels Furniture Store-Allentown, Pa. Postcard has ended.

From J. Aug(ust) Fels of 339 N. 2nd St. Allentown, Pa. to Diehls Furniture Store, Allentown, Pa. Mailed correctly and shipped free. The Benesch Furniture Company or Benesch's, as it was commonly known, was founded in Baltimore, MD in 1850 by Isaac Benesch.

With the death of Phaon Diel in 1917, his furniture store on North Eighth Street went through several hands, and in 1922, was purchased by Frack C. Wolfe. Wolfe and his son, F Willard Wolfe, interested Isaac Benesch, who conducted business in Baltimore, to come to Allentown. Benesch Purchased the business in 1922, and transferred the existing inventory of the former Diehl's store to his new building at 931-933 Hamilton Street.

The Benesch Furnature Company operated successfully for deadens in Allentown, and opened outlets in Pottsville, Lebanon, Harrisburg, Camp Hill and Easton. In August 1972, the Hamilton Street store was sold to a leasing company, as it wanted to move to a suburban location. The plans never materialized however, and in January 1974 the business decided to close. The Benesch Furniture Company shut its doors at the end of February. Note that the face name Diehl is mis-pelled. It should be Diel.
