It has 2 different sizes of core rod. My daughter uses the large rod for 18 through 12 gauge. She hasn't tried larger than 12 gauge (that's the largest I have). No problems at all. I bet to would depend on malleability of the wire more than the gauge. This aluminum is pretty malleable. She has used a 14 gauge brass wire, but again, it is pretty malleable also. The smaller gauges are a breeze (20-28 gauge). I hope this helps.
