Description

The listing, CONFEDERATE A. P. HILL ENGRAVED PICTURE has ended.

Steel plate engraved picture of Confederate Gen. A. P. Hill, Stonewall Jackson's ablest general. The steel plate engraved picture was made between 1865 and 1875 Under the picture of Hill in small print is "O'Neill NY" Under the picture is printed "GEN A. P. HILL" and under that in smaller type is "from a Photograph taken from life" and at bottom is C. B. Richardson, Publisher. The picture was probably printed for limited edition book on Civil War or for individual sale. Steel plate engraved pictures were limited run and sharpness of lines indicates this to be an early print. The picture does have small piece missing from top left hand corner (enlarge picture to see damage on the corner of the paper the engraving is printed on).

The picture is 5 inches by 9 inches, unmatted and unframed. It was scanned darker than actual print to show age spot discoloration, however only the spot over the head of A. P. Hill is very visible to the naked eye. The picture shows little discoloration and is in excellent condition for being well over 140 years old. Sadly, a small piece on top left hand side is missing (see enlarged picture above) but probably could easily be hidden by a frame or matte.
