JUDEA CAPTA
Coin of Vespasian
70 A.D.
Isaiah 3: 25-26 "Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war…And she, being desolate, shall sit upon the ground "
The prophet Isaiah foretold the fall of Jerusalem in the First Revolt of 70 A.D. This is one of several coins struck in Palestine by the Romans to remind the Jews of their defeat. True to the prophecy, a weeping Jewess is shown with head bowed, seated beside a date palm (symbol of Judea). Obverse shows the emperor, with the Latin inscription, "Imperator Caesar Vespasianus Augustus."
