Nigerian Yinka Dare was brought to the US at age 19 to play basketball, despite never having played basketball before (he was scouted because of his height). He played one year of high school ball, then two years at George Washington, leading them to the rounds of 32 and 16 in the NCA tournament; it was the first Sweet 16 ever for GWU. After his sophomore year, he entered the NBA Draft and was drafted 14th overall by the New Jersey (Brooklyn) Nets. He was injured 3 minutes into his first NBA game, missed his first season, and never truly recovered, exiting the NBA after only 4 seasons and 110 games played.
Dare died in 2004 of a heart attack. He was 32.
