Lovely to See You (Out There):
I had heard a lot about this movie from another reviewer friend of mine, but hesitated at first because so many of John Cusack's recent films have been a bit disappointing. I was pleasantly surprised because, though this romantic comedy is nothing earth shatteringly new, it worked for me! Cute, sparkling dialogue, and a fantastic cast in Cusack, Diane Lane, Christopher Plummer, Stockard Channing, Elizabeth Perkins, and Dermot Mulroney. These are the things that make an otherwise rather conventional formula script come to life in its own way.
Without going into the plot like so many others have, I will state what I think makes the movie work. Diane Lane is a woman other women my age (none of your friggin' business!) can relate to, and the bad dates, familial meddling, and other embarrassing situations definitely hit home. John Cusack--yes, I admit I'm a fan--is believable as a romantic lead because he isn't great looking, which makes him the "normal guy" believable that women end up chosing more times than not over a Brad Pitt type. Add to the fact that his character has the obscure interest in boat making and is romantically sensitive, and you know the girls are going to love this dating movie.
The supporting cast is as strong as the leads, and I found myself simultaneously laughing or being moved quite often. Most pleasing to me was that the family dog, Mother Teresa, was a Newfoundland, because they are so very rarely used in movies, and I happen to have a dog that is part Newfie and lab. They tend to be loyal, lovable animals just like that one, and are the greatest companions. If you can overlook the cliche's and are just in the mood for a thoroughly entertaining romance flick, please check out Must Love Dogs. It may just be your cup of tea as well.
