Considered a flop just a few weeks after the coin was first issued in 1979, this smaller dollar was never accepted by the public because it was too close in size to a quarter. The geniuses at the US Mint continued the coin for 2 more years and then brought it back for one year in 1999 to be used in postal vending machines (until they got rid of all machines in lobbies of post offices the next year!).
