not quite the same difference.. your modem is the box connected to your cable/phone line that turns the cable/phone service into internet per say.. you connect the router to you modem and then to your pc, acting as a middle man that can produce more Ethernet ports or wifi ... i suggest finding out which u really need before bidding as acquiring the wrong device will not help your problem
