Description

The listing, Apple TV 2nd Generation, Plus Mounting System has ended.

This auction is for a second generation Apple TV. The exact model is MC572LL/A. The specs are listed here:

http://goo.gl/VamwL

In a nutshell, the Apple TV is a tiny little box (in my photo, you can see its scale compared to a Post-It Note) that connects to an HDTV via an HDMI cable (720p video) and streams content over the network. It can connect to the network either via an ethernet cable or wireless. It can access content from the iTunes Store, or from other Apple devices (or computers running iTunes) on the same network. Further, it can play videos from YouTube and Vimeo, browse Flickr, and access other internet media services including Netflix (requires subscription, of course) and a few other subscription services. It comes with a very simple remote control. However, if you have an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch, you can use a remote control app from the App Store in order to control the Apple TV.

It's a neat little box and still works great. I originally got it for Netflix Instant Streaming. However, I canceled that subscription about a year ago. Recently, I realized I hadn't even used the box for several months and that I may as well pass it along to a fellow Listian for a few credits.

The winner of this auction will receive the Apple TV unit, its AC adapter, and the remote control, all in the original box. Note that an HDMI cable is required but does NOT come with the package.

As a bonus, I'm throwing in an Apple TV mounting system. It's supposed to mount the Apple TV behind a TV while still allowing the infrared remote to control the unit. I could never really make a go of it, but I'm putting it in with this auction in the hope that someone else might find it useful.

I have updated this Apple TV to the latest software as of May 19, 2012 and wiped my settings. Shipping for this Apple TV + mounting kit lot is on me. Happy bidding!

My advice to the person who asked about hooking this up to a non-HDMI TV: don't even try. After you buy an expensive converter you will realize that you have other problems: poor picture quality, poor resolution, etc... Your older tv is inferior in more ways than just the connection type. Apple could have engineered other connector types into this but didn't for good reason.. Older TVs lack the visual precision needed in many cases....

I'm inclined to agree with you. Further, some of the HDMI conversion solutions seem to cost nearly as much as a smallish HDMI-compatible TV would cost anyway.

One other thing for folks to be aware of. There is no legitimate "HDMI to Component" cable. Yes, you can see some being sold on eBay. They are fakes. The electronic aspect of what would be required CANNOT be accomplished with just a cable. So if you fall for that scam and buy one, you're buying a useless cable with two connectors on it.

I didn't fall for it, but I almost did!

@ lukescotto ... Uh no. Red, white and yellow are composite video and stereo audio. Yellow is the video and the other two are the stereo audio.

Component audio are the same - red and white but the yellow video is replaced by three cables

Red, white, and yellow cables are component cables, and red, green, blue i believe are composite cables. Most things use component.

There is just some really good things about both. The Roku allows Hulu while Apple doesn't and the Apple has YouTube and airplay. Both are really great competitors and I can't help but want both :) (BTW just trying to give my2 cents on what I think about the two)

I've had a Roku and it hooked up to my old tv fine. It had one of those connectors with the red, white, and yellow connection (like for DVD players idk what its called lol
) and it looked pretty good. They still sell them. I've just really wanted an Apple TV because my Roku doesn't allow me to watch any of my iTunes movies on it.

To the person asking about Hulu-Plus on Apple-TV, there is an incredibly useful 'streaming media comparison chart' that is accurate and updated regularly here:

http://bit.ly/KilcaM
(NOTE: Lisita inserts a space randomly in some URL's... you might have to remove that space, if inserted, for the link to work)

According to that chart, the Apple-TV 3rd Gen does NOT support Hulu-Plus, so I doubt that this 2nd Gen unit would either...

Nice auction! Apple TV is sweet... AirPlay is probably it's best feature! Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I do have a digital tv tuner on my hi-def computer monitor, so I think I can use that if need be. Fanned, watching & bidding!

Do you know what kind of warranty is remaining? Any Applecare or anything?
May 21st, 2012 at 1:04:50 PM PDT by

I meant to mention in the description that I purchased this unit in December, 2010. I'm not too familiar with how Apple warranties work. If they last longer than a year, maybe this still as a warranty. But I lack any supporting documentation... no, wait-- I just checked back in my email and I do still have the original receipt (Apple emails receipts when you purchase in the Apple Store).

So I have to have an HDTV to use it? I have an older tube tv I wanted to use it on for the kids - are there outputs for analog use?
May 21st, 2012 at 9:56:14 AM PDT by
Original
The Apple TV only has one video output method: HDMI (it can also do audio output via S/PDIF). Thus, you either need a TV than can accept HDMI input, or you need a converter to some other adapter. I just checked Amazon and there are various HDMI -> RCA/composite solutions of different price points. So this might be a solution. Quality won't be great, though.
