I am so electronics stupid... so what exactly does this do?

I have never used it. It says on the box that it is a 10 in 1 reader/writer can read and write to all the most common digital media types. Transferring pictures and other files to your computer has never been faster or easier. The software that comes with it allows you to create your own photo slide show and playback on your home DVD player. With on DVD you can take your digital pictures, arrange them in a timeline, edit your photos, add background music and burn a slide show to a CD which can be played back on a home DVD player. WOW ! ! ! That sounds nice. What I get from this is it can read your SD cards from cameras, or other devices and has software that will allow you to create DVD's of photos including music... Hope this helps, I have never used one of these either. It was a gift when I got my computer but I never took time to use it.
