The cards were produced by the Topps Company beginning in 1967, usually in a sticker format. The original series sold for two years, and the concept proved popular enough that it has been revived every few years since. Per trader legend, at one time the product outsold Topps baseball cards.
Wacky Packages returned in 1973 for a highly successful run. They continued until 1977 through a total of 16 series. Some cards were sold in reprinted editions beginning in 1979 to 1980 (4 series with puzzle/checklist backs).

Newly designed series were produced in 1985 and 1991, but these strayed from the original concept and were not as successful. An all-new series (ANS) of stickers was released in 2004 and more followed through 2007's ANS6. ANS7 is scheduled to be released on August 23, 2010
