U.S. #988 commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Gompers, one of the most prominent figures in America’s labor history. Gompers was born in London, England, and moved to the United States in 1863. He worked as a cigar-maker and became involved with that industry’s trade unions – a relationship he would keep for the rest of his life.
Gompers is best known for organizing the American Federation of Labor (AFL) union. He was a strong advocate of equal rights for women. Gompers primary goal was to improve the standard of living of workers.
