I do not see anything stating that it would need ink.
This is what is in the box, photo scanner, ac power adapter, users guide, quick start and warranty card, calibration card, roller cleaning sheet, sensor cleaning swab, usb cable, and 256 MB memory card. (all new). Thank You for your Q.
