They did put a dog in space. The Russians did. He was a famous canine. Laika (Russian: ?????, literally meaning "Barker"; November 3, 1957) was a Soviet space dog that became the first animal to orbit the Earth – as well as the first animal to die in orbit. Thanks for bidding.
