Sapphire Dragon Tree
Paulownia tomentosa

The Sapphire Dragon Tree has the unique distinction of being labeled the fastest growing tree on earth. It is know by many names - Empress Tree, Foxglove Tree, Kawakami, Kiri Tree, Princess Tree, Rattlebox Tree, Royal Paulownia or Sapphire Princess. Regardless of what you want to call it, there is no doubt about its impressive ornamental features. It is a beautiful, super fast growing, large leaved member of the figwort family, marketed most often as a quick growing shade tree. Growing up to 8-10 feet a year, in 3-5 years, this tree achieves what other tree species take generations to achieve. In early spring, this tree puts on an awe inspiring show with its large violet to blue, trumpet-like blossoms which fill the air with a sweet fragrance. Despite the exotic look of these trees, they are surprisingly hardy and can tolerate harsh winters. Native to eastern Asia, this deciduous tree is hardy from zones 5 through 9 and roots are hardy enough so that even in colder zones they are often grown and cut to near ground level in fall and grown as a large-leafed shrub the following season. Seeds are easy to germinate and seedlings grow rapidly, flowering in as little as 2-3 years under good growing conditions.

I think this is the plant I've been looking for for years.. Does it have hollow stems when the leaves are cut? The lady had it in her yard and she cut it to the ground every fall. It came back up beautifully..about 10' tall in one year..I would hate to think what would happen if you forgot to cut it down a year..lol..fanned and bidding

It is probably the fastiest growing shade tree there is. It probably is the one you are talking about. I tried for a couple years now to get these and they are always sold out. It will get up to about 20' tall if you don't cut it. I you keep it cut it can stay a bush. It doesn't require a lot of care. I guess its kinda like the "weed" of trees.

Probably 4 or 5. These are trees that grow like crazy. You shouldn't need to many unless you are growing a forest. But if you want a forest let me know and maybe I can get some more for you.
