Bank of Upper Canada – One Cent Bank Token 1850 – 160+ Years Old
The winner of this auction will receive this 160 plus year old St. George the Dragon Slayer 1850 Bank Token shown in the attached photos.
This coin was probably a ‘metal detector find’. It has corrosion and light surface pitting which is common when a coin was buried in the earth at one time and exposed to acids in the soil. This can really do a number on coins depending on how many years they were buried.
This coin is pretty banged up, some letters and images are readable, some not. The obverse is better than the reverse. Coins like this are similar to the US Hard Times or Civil War Tokens that were minted by private companies because of the shortage of small denomination coins for everyday transactions
And foreign coins like these were legal tender in the United States until 1857.
