Questions & Comments
You always have the neatest things Paula! This is a vintage brass cricket box. The Chinese have kept crickets as pets since antiquity, mainly for their "song" and for good luck. Later, around the 12th century, the Chinese also began keeping them for fighting. They would bet and gamble on them, bringing high prizes for the winners. Fighting and breeding top-preforming crickets became especially popular during the Qing Dynasty. Brass cricket boxes are highly collectible today and some of the older and more ornate boxes are quite valuable. Many people today use them as trinket/stash boxes and some even use them for burning incense, since they have the holes. Great auction hun- super good luck to you!! :)
