do you have to have service from sprint or verizon to run this.

Nope. The only thing that you need is a WIFI wireless internet already setup as this connects to a wireless internet 'hotspot' so to speak. No other services needed. Google Android Marketplace (App Store) has a lot of free apps you can download as well, some you'll have to pay for. Just like an iPad, etc.
