Add in a touch of music with "Für Elise" by Beethoven, music box style, by twisting the top. Flip the red switch (as shown in the picture under the top) and you'll add an assortment of colorful lights to the magic of the horses as they circle around the carousel. Operated by flat round batteries already installed. It is made of plastic not metal and as seen in the last couple of carousel pictures, there is part of the base that has a notch missing. Unfortunately I didn't discover this until I brought it home and it's too difficult to return or exchange it at this point. My choice would be to simply put that part in the back and you'll never know it's there. Cosmetic only and does not affect the music, horse movement, or lights in any way.
