They are backup batteries that are specifically designed for these units. In the event of a short power failure, your Internet and telephone will maintain.

Will it work with Comcast?

It is designed for Comcast, but I have not tried it since I do not have Comcast. I've been told that some of these units are blocked by them and you have to request they authorize the MacID. I can tell you what the MacID's are if you wish.
