Is any of the thread rotten? Old spool of cotton thread don't stand up well to time. Just pull a piece and if it breaks fast you will know.. Interested, watching.

I didn't know thread could rot. I pulled a piece and had to really pull it hard to get it to finally break.

Great. Bid placed. I can never get enough thread. I probably have a thousand spools. But when I need a shade, I have it...

I just looked at all the spools of thread. Only one says 4 cord cotton. Another one says Silk Substitute. The rest do not say what they are made of. I received all of these when I purchased a sewing machine from someone else. These were in the drawers of the sewing machine, so I do not know that much about them.

Off the subject... how is the weather in Rochester ?
I have an uncle who lives there :-)
We used to stop at the Fisher Price plant on the way to visit , when I was a kid. Nice area :-)

We are having an unusually mild winter this year. Today was in the 60's, which is not how it is normally in February. Not complaining though, I would rather have this weather any day than a foot of snow. Lol

Thread 'dry' toys if it is stored in an attic, basement, garage , or even some of these storage units. Cotton thread, especially black, can dry rot from the dye process.
I restore vintage quilts and people often give me their grandma's old notions, thread, etc. The black fabrics even fall apart.
They don't have to be exposed to sunlight or moths. The fabric and thread just dries up and falls apart.
I like the vintage spools and collect them. :-)

I know what you mean about the vintage spools, they are not like the ones in the stores today.

I have some that were my grandma's. When the spools were empty you could see her name written on the wood. Also 'white', or 'black'. She used to leave them at the shop and they would refill them from a huge spindle. She told me about it. Now people just go buy another spool on a plastic spool instead of wooden. :-)
