She meets a determined teacher and she not only learns to read and write, but to make it in life on her own. WARNING! This is very graphic and not something I would advise teens to read without their parents reading it first.

Yes it is paperback. My daughter bought it new and read it and gave it to me. I read it also. So, new book - very good condition and very interesting. But also pretty shocking!
