The First Battle of Bull Run...
... was one of the most significant battles of the Civil War. It was the first major confrontation between the armies of the North and the South- marking a point of no return and the beginning of a war that would rage for four devastating years.

"Today will be known as BLACK MONDAY. We are utterly and disgracefully routed, beaten, whipped by secessionists." -George Templeton Strong

Both the Union and the Confederacy predicted a short war and an easy victory following the April 1861 attack on Fort Sumter. Richmond,Virginia. And Southerners were equally impatient to act. Across the nation, young men who had never been more than a day's ride from home prepared for battle. Neither army was fully trained or equipped, yet leaders from both sides were pressured to act. On July 21, 1861 the two armies with a combined force of over 60,000 troops met near Manassas, Virginia.

Congressmen packed picnic baskets and followed in carriages to watch the Union whip the Rebels. But after an intense day of battle, the Confederates were victorious, the Union army retreated and both sides knew they were in for a long and bloody war.
