okay please explain to me why you have cards that harm you as part of its ability seems counter productive.

It's not exactly harming you. This creature is like pestilence. Let's say the opponent has a herd of 2/2 myr out there. I can remove 2 counters for 2 black mana and put 2 -1/-1 on EVERY one of THEIR creatures & kill them ALL. Then I can attack the opponent with this big 6/6 flying creature. I can even do it on their turn if I choose to. Works pretty good.
