Despite making 3 All-Star teams with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Cards thought it was a good idea to trade him for Phillies Rick Wise after the 1971 season. Wise was a real-deal pitcher in his own right, and won 188 games in his career. Carlton? Carlton would win 4 Cy Young Awards with the Phillies between 1972-1982 and is remembered as one of the most dominant pitchers of the past 50 years, winning 329 games and striking out an amazing 4136 batters. For a short period in the early 1980s, Carlton was recognized as the all-time strikeout king, as he battled two pitchers for the all-time lead (Gaylord Perry, Carlton, and Nolan Ryan all were the leader at some point during a 3 year chase, although the crown ended with Nolan Ryan).
