Drafted in 1952 by the Bears, Brown first served two years in the Marines before joining the team in 1954. After serving one season as a backup, Brown beat out the legendary George Halas for the starting job in 1955 and in 1956 led the Bears int the NFL title game. He would continue to play with Chicago until he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1962, eventually beating out Bobby Layne for the starting job in 1963 nhere he put up stellar numbers despite taking a beating behind the early 1960s Steelers porous offensive line.
