As a manager, Fregosi was responsible for turning both the California Angels and Philadelphia Phillies into contenders, but before that, he was a 6-time All Star at shortstop with those very same Angels. With considerable power for the position, he collected MVP votes in 8 consecutive seasons (1963-70) and was arguably the "cream of the crop" among shortstops during is playing years. He spent his whole life in baseball until his death in 2014 at the age of 71.
