Yes it works, and there were smudges on the screen when I first photographed it.
I wiped them off and added a better picture.

How does this work exactly? I know it takes batteries, but does it actually attach to the Gameboy somehow?

Yes, it slides onto the Gameboy. Worked for kids playing in the car during night travels.
