In Chinese mythology, the hell they refer to is Di Yu ("underground hold/court"). Diyu is where the souls of the dead are first judged by the Lord of the Underworld (Yan Wang) to be either escorted to heaven or sent into the maze of underground levels and chambers where souls are taken to atone for their earthly sins.
