The African Elephant is the world’s largest land mammal. For decades, elephants were hunted to the brink of extinction, due in large part to the value of the ivory in their tusks. Today, serious efforts are underway to protect these majestic creatures.
First produced in 2004, Somalia Silver Elephant coins are officially known as the African Wildlife Series even though no animals other than pachyderms appear on them.
These popular coins are struck by Germany’s Bavarian State Mint under the supposed commission of the Somali government, although their true origin is uncertain. Somalia is scarcely a nation any longer, let alone one capable of producing such superb coins. War-ravaged, economically prostrate, and mostly famed for piracy today, Somalia is nevertheless named as the source of this magnificent coin series.
Each year features a unique obverse design. The reverse always features the coat of arms for the nation of Somalia: a pair of leopards holding a heraldic shield, which features a background of horizontal lines with a single star in the center.
