Originally known as the Strictly Stock Series (1949), it was called the Winston Cup Series from 1971 to 2003 (sponsored by R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company cigarette brand Winston).

The NASCAR race event has changed names several times, including Nextel Cup Series (2004–2007).
Currently, it is the Sprint Cup after Sprint acquired Nextel in 2005.
