Lincoln Cent Errors / Oddities/Mistrikes (7)

Included in this auction are the following:
1) The BIE mint error
2) The ‘filled letter’ error – lower part of the ‘B’ in Liberty
3) The ‘filled number’ error – the 5 in the date
4) The ‘extra wheat’ error
5) The ‘cracked die’ error
6) The ‘cracked skull’ error
7) The ‘off center rim’ error’

Mint errors are caused by deterioration in the die after many coins are struck or by a malfunction in the machinery. Many of these ‘oddities’ are quite common. You can research coin errors on the internet or check eBay where there are many for sale. The most famous errors include the 1955 ‘double die’ and the copper 1943 cent. If you collect Lincoln Cents you should have a few examples represented in your collection. Errors become a variety if a certain amount of coins are found with the exact same error.

If you are looking for some common Lincoln Cent errors look no further. These are some examples of errors caused by common problems such as die cracks, off center punches, and weak strikes. I collected quite a few of these and I have recently decided to reduce the size of my collection.

The BIE mint error is exclusive to Lincoln Cents; Liberty appears to be misspelled because of a die break between the BE that looks like an ‘i’.

The lower part of the ‘B’ in Liberty is filled in (also due to die cracking)

Filled in Letters and Numbers (like the ‘5’ in the date). One of the more common oddities caused by die cracking are filled in letters or numbers.

The ‘extra wheat’ error is due to cracking in the reverse die.

Die cracks on coins are caused by a shallow crack in the die that creates a thin recess in the die surface. During the strike the planchet metal fills in the recess.

The ‘cracked skull’ error is caused by a die crack through Lincoln’s head .

The ‘rim’ error is caused by a mechanical malfunction in the machinery
