What a Way to Spend the War---Navy Nurse POWs in the Philippines by Dorothy Still Danner nonfiction--former library book--good cond., softcover. LARGE PRINT edt.
By the time Corregidor fell in 1942, prisoners of the Japanese in Manila included eleven US Navy nurses. The nurses, although not physically abused, lived in constant fear for their lives. Rightfully so, too, for they were scheduled for execution on the very day they were rescued by the Eleventh Airborne Division. Determination and toughness got them through each day, despite the fact that Danner often makes light of their hardships and the illnesses she overcame. The lack of food and medicine and the uncertainty of their fate, however, took a toll on the captives. What A Way to Spend a War offers a fascinating look at a young woman's development under extraordinary circumstances.
