The listing, Original Victorian Antique BOBBIN LACE Cream Off White Ecru has ended.
Vintage & probably antique is this lace. While rummaging thru an antique mall I came across 3 Victorian solid lace balls, looking like ornaments. I examined them to find they were indeed solid lace, not just covered Styrofoam like would be done today. Being the size of large baseballs, I decided to buy them, not knowing what was deep inside as far as condition of the lace. To my surprise, while unwinding on the drive home, the condition of the lace was beautiful. Old, yes, & the condition of the thread was perfect! Some is tea/age stains on the edges, wear, age, use. Each ball had a different tint although all 3 were the same design. I first thought they looked like butterflies but now I think dragonflies in flight.
The lace : Cream color, ecru, ivory, off white, you choose. Hand made bobbin lace, painstakingly, with cotton or linen threads. I will only list this a few times a year while keeping some.
Width is 1-1/2 inches
This lace was assessed by Rosemary owner of Sheelin Vintage Lace & Textiles in Ireland & she stated, **:Your lace is a bobbin lace, and the little radiating pieces in the middle are called wheat ears. You find them in Cluny lace which is French but also on Bedfordshire lace which is English and also in Maltese bobbin lace. Just to confuse matters they also did do bobbin lace like this in Ireland so very hard to say exactly where it was made but at least we know it is bobbin lace.** Made in the 1800s.
Exceptional for authentic Victorian dress, bridal, & period costumes, shoes, purses. Gorgeous on hats, brims, collars, nightwear. Not harsh, soft & comfortable. Pillow cases and slips, bed linens, headbands, edging on winter knit hats? Because it is a cotton linen thread, like any such fabric it can be bleached or colored easily.
