Once this fatal mistake is made, you have a battle on your hands to extract yourself and continue your journey. To make matters worse and impede your progress, into this sea of humanity there will be those who are holding hands, stopped in a group to listen to a “Mother Hen” tour guide, want to go across or against the tide, or simply ride a motor cycle at high speed through it. Oh yes, to make matters worse, there are side lanes, junctions, various routes you can take and at all turns, as a novice, you run the risk of becoming lost! So this then is Market Street in Pushkar. It is oppressively crowded, confusing, noise and your senses have been assaulted from all directions. You are exhausted and have not yet seen a camel, a horse or the fairground! What have you done you ask yourself as a group of chanting devotees push past you and the bigger sitting in your path almost trips you over. n Market Street you have to keep your wits about you but running this gauntlet is almost a right of passage at the annual Camel Fair and very worth the risk. Did I mention that I loved it and went back again and again and again?
