Description: Easy and quick growing annuals that self-seed reliably. The common name, touch-me-not, refers to the spring-loaded seed pods which burst open when touched. In early July an explosion of delicate rose-scented blooms forms and continue on through fall in a vibrant mix of tropical colors. The 2-inch wide, double flowers are grouped together in clusters which emerge at the leaf axils. Foliage consists of light-green, serrated, lance-shaped leaves up to 5-inches in length. This native of south Asia lends an exotic flair to gardens.

Uses: Beautiful in mass as a mid-sized planting in beds and borders. Performs well in full sun to partial shade. Plants are adaptable to a variety of soil conditions but prefer moist but well drained soil that is rich in composted materials. Balsam is a low maintenance plant and not prone to serious insect or disease problems. Plants will self-seed in ideal conditions and can be aggressive in tropical climates. Attracts bees and butterflies.
