Description
The listing, A book from 1877- Called "The Home Guide or a Book by 500 ladies" has ended.
This is a first edition recipe and Home guide by 500 ladies from 1877. It is such an interesting book full of recipes that seem quite primitive to our day today. They ate some weird stuff back then, let me tell you! This book is still in print today and can be found in any bookstore, but its not a first edition you will find there. This book is found at antiquarian book stores for around $150.00.

Very interesting item- thank goodness for progress! F&W
you have no idea! This book shows how rough it was back then by the things they considered edible. For instance one recipe is called "Mock Turtle soup" and it starts out " Take 1/2 of a calf's head fresh unstripped of skin, remove the brains and boil..." Ewww!! Some of them are gross, but to them it was just the way...
The condition is old, fragile, and still in tact, Minor water stain on the back cover, but no damage to pages. Included is a hand written recipe from God knows when- it was in the book when I got it. The pages have yellowed a bit and have a little discoloration on the but then again remember this is a 138 year old recipe book that people used while cooking so there may be crumbs or what not between the pages. This book probably belongs in a museum,...but was kept in someone's kitchen for a century!
