HINOKI CYPRESS (Camecyparis Obtusa ‘Compacta’)


The Hinoki Cypress Evergreen is a species of cypress native to central Japan, but can now be found in North America since it was imported here. It is a conifer with flat deep green fan-like foliage. The leaves are edged and scale-like, blunt tipped (obtuse), green above and blue below with a white stomatal band at the base of each scale-leaf. The cones are pea-sized and globose, with 8-12 scales arranged in opposite pairs. The bark is dark red-brown. The Hinoki is a beautiful uncommon evergreen which is the smallest of the species. Not to be confused with Arborvitae. It is a slow-growing tree. A very hardy tree which needs to be kept outdoors.
