Description

The listing, 5 Giant Purple Martin House Gourd Seeds has ended.

Purple Martins are wonderful to have around. They eat the mosquitoes and other flying insects on your property. There are directions to a website at the end of this description for making your own gourd martin houses.

Let your creative imagination run wild and have fun doing it,.

Soak the seeds in water overnight to give them a leg-up on germination. Plant the seeds in situ (in their permanent spot) as soon as the last frost date has passed in your area.

If you want to train them up a trellis or fence, plant the seeds about 2’-3’ apart (intersperse pea seeds in between if you’d like). Birdhouse gourds like well-drained soil and some compost or composted manure tossed in there once in a while.

The gourds will tolerate a light frost, so let them ripen on the vine as long as possible. But soon after that, you’ll need to harvest them and bring them indoors for several months to cure the rest of the way. The gourds will be ready to harvest when the stems turn brown.

Martins are wonderful. They come to my property in the mountains every year on May 1. I have spent a lot of money on two martin houses on poles that allow you to take them down and clean them. Sparrows moved into one and the starlings claim the other one every year. I don't have the heart to kick them out, so I am going to try the martin houses made from gourds and see if they will nest in them. I don't think other birds like them if you read directions on how to make the hole and where to place them. I have 14 1/2 acres so I have the space, just have to grow the gourds and paint them. Why don't you try them?
