One item that I personally collect are snuff bottles. Looking through them recently, this particular one caught my attention as it is very unique and quite bold in design. I thought then I would give it to someone in my Listia family.
Gemstones cover the outside with a turquoise in the center on both sides. Shortly after I bought this at an antiques fair, after close examination, I saw where someone had updated the parts that were probably loose or beat up. Look at the stick which is now copper with a curve at the bottom. It was probably plastic with a spoon at the end. Also, at the very top of the bottle it has a metal washer-like piece which matches the inside of the cap. Usually the top or cap will snap in place and stay on. With this update, it merely sits on top and will fall out if not secured. It's like any other "antique". Once you change or upgrade or modify it, the distinction is gone.
However, this is too lovely of a snuff bottle not to include in a collection. You don't find them covered in gems. That's what makes this different. It is also signed on the bottom. It's in Chinese but it is signed which definitely hikes up the value. The last picture is the bottom, but you can't really make it out clearly enough.
It stands 3" tall including the cap. Around the middle it's 7" diameter.
