Description

The listing, 1965 uncirculate special mint set (unique and rare) has ended.

1965 special mint set, uncirculated in original unopened packaging. 5 legal tender coins (Kennedy half dollar is 40% silver) and 1 special mint set coin. even the package has "United States Special Mint Set" embossed across the center.
Due to rising silver prices, coin shortages gripped the nation in 1965. In response, the U.S. Mint did not produce Mint Sets and Proof Sets between 1965 and 1967. Rather, they issued these Special Mint Sets. The coins in this set are struck from specially prepared dies, but not as proofs. As a result, they display mirror surfaces that are unique to these sets. In order to alleviate the coin shortage, the Mint removed the mintmarks from all coins this year. So, the 1965 set contains five coins: The Lincoln Memorial Cent, the Jefferson Nickel, the Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter and Kennedy Half Dollar. Because silver prices had risen far above the nominal value of the dime and quarter, these coins were struck in a special "clad" composition for the first time. For these coins, a layer of copper is sandwiched between two layers of nickel. The dime and quarter are still being struck this way today. The Kennedy Half, however, still contained 40% silver in this 1965 Special Mint Set.
