Wow. I'm so sorry about your husband. ;(
Children are our legacy, though , aren't they?
My children are 17 and 13. They started trying to learn japanese at about age 11, which I hear is toward the end of the easy language learning window. Sadly, although i have a "good ear" I never learned much in way of languages, although I love them. Because i didn't get started until high school. I think by then it's very hard to pick up-- at least it was for me.

I can't claim to know how effective this would be for you specifically, but it is a different approach than most. It may be worth a try. ;)

My daughter reads manga and watches the films and is trying to learn the language that way, this will surely help! She also studies French and her teacher says she has a natural ability for language...future interpreter maybe?! :)
