This auction is for an original Horse painting by Lucy Baker , It's painted with watercolors in the style of Sumi Ink painting. It is 12" tall by 9 " wide, and will fit into a standard sized frame. I painted it a month or so ago. As an artist , I've painted horses for close to 50 years(or more!), Starting when I was little , and began to ride (age 8) . I first exhibited with my horses between 7th and 9th grade in the halls (display cases) of Jr. High School! . Since then I've painted, drawn and sculpted hundreds of horses. There were a few particular people whose work I admired as a kid , among them were several Chinese calligraphers , and one in college, my teacher Chen Si Yu. I wasn't that great at straight out calligraphy, but I was better at combining East and West, marrying the two styles, such as you see here. (I was never much for "rules and Principles" calligraphy is based on a "discipline" of a very specific way of holding the brush , the angles which are very standardized. And it is practiced as one would practice playing piano.Once you learn the basics, then you get creative! But I always had an extremely creative nature, so I would skip over and jump right to the heart of calligraphic painting. That is, at it's most extreme , calligraphy becomes high art when it is at it's most free and spontaneous! That's where I'm at my best, and most at home. Like the Literati painters who lived long ago, when it comes to art. rules are made to be broken. Here you can see layers of paint (atypical for calligraphy) and a bit of shake or nervousness in the edge handling which is intentional as my portrayal of the personality of this horse, demanded it be painted that way.(Certain horses are what are called "Bombproof" meaning they are the opposite of nervous. Other horses are extremely high strung!
