On June 18, 1812, the United States declared war on Great Britain, initiating two years of intense fighting. British North American forces fought tenaciously to preserve the way of life of a future Canada. In recognition of their bravery, the Royal Canadian Mint created five circulation coins to commemorate these defining moments of the War of 1812 – four (4) commemorative 25-cent coins and a commemorative 2 dollar (Toonie) coin.

The winner of this auction will receive one (1) new, packaged 2012 Canadian 2-dollar ‘HMS Shannon coin separated from the Royal Canadian Mint’s “HMS Shannon 5-pack.”

The metal composition of the outer ring is nickel-plated steel and the inner ring brass-plated aluminium bronze; diameter: 28mm; weight: 6.92 grams.

PLEASE NOTE - This coin is in brilliant uncirculated condition, still in mint sealed packet, you will receive the exact coin show in the photographs. Coin easel NOT included.

Its history—including that of the Leda-class frigate, HMS Shannon—has become important chapters in the narrative of Canada's evolution from colony to sovereign nation. The two-dollar coin featuring HMS Shannon commemorates the historic 11-minute battle with USS Chesapeake off the coast of Boston. The capture of the Chesapeake marked a decisive naval victory for the British at a time when morale was waning.” RCM
